Surgery isn’t anybody’s idea of a good time, but when it’s needed in an emergency or recommended as either a diagnostic procedure or a procedure to improve one’s quality of life, most agree that having access to local services is ideal. Having a high-quality option close to home is more convenient than traveling to a big city. And sometimes it’s not just about convenience for the patient—it’s also about making life a little easier for friends and family who support the patient.
Types of surgeries and pre- and post-care
The surgeons at Prowers Medical Center perform mostly outpatient, or single-day, surgical procedures. They focus on five surgical specialty areas, including general surgery, OB/GYN, podiatry, orthopedics and ophthalmology. Total joint replacements by the orthopedic surgeon usually require a one-night stay.

Christine Bogardus, DO, has been a general surgeon at Prowers Medical Center since 2018. Together she and several visiting general and specialty surgeons provide the full line of surgical services offerings.
General surgical services at Prowers Medical Center include appendectomies, colonoscopies, gallbladder and hernia repairs, breast surgery and more. OB/GYN surgeries include hysterectomies, tubal ligations and uterine ablations. Cataract surgery is performed by the ophthalmologist. Podiatry and orthopedic surgeries cover most things related to joints, feet and ankles, and carpal tunnel.
Private pre-op and post-op areas along with private consult areas enhance the surgical experience. An inviting and well-appointed rehabilitation gym and skilled team of therapists are on-the-ready to advance patient healing after surgery.
For surgery types not performed at Prowers Medical Center—cardiothoracic for example—your local family provider and therapy professionals may still be involved in your pre- and post-surgery care.
Excellence
“Recently our department had a survey, or site visit, by an international hospital accreditation organization—DNV—and the department received good reviews,” said Dianna Davis, RN, BSN, CNOR, RNFA, MHA and manager of Surgical Services at Prowers Medical Center. “Our staff does such a good job. Many of our nursing and departmental staff members are working toward multiple certifications to always be the best they can be. Communication and training are key to a successful team, and I believe that we have one here at Prowers Medical Center.”
Davis has been a nurse for 40 years, many of those as a traveling nurse, which means she has seen a lot of surgery departments. “It’s a long way to drive from Lamar to Denver or Colorado Springs,” she continued. “The administration at Prowers Medical Center is very dedicated to providing the equipment, staff and providers so that we can offer many types of surgical procedures to the local community at a very high level of care.”
Patient Comfort
Of course, surgical procedures also require anesthesia. Patient comfort is always a priority. John Newcomer, CRNA, works closely with the patients and the surgeons to create a plan for pain management at Prowers Medical Center. “We try to do nerve blocks whenever it’s safe and effective to do so. Pain blocks usually keep the patient more comfortable than general anesthesia, and there are fewer side effects, less nausea and overall less sedation,” he said.
Newcomer also feels that not only are the surgical procedures at Prowers Medical Center just as good as those in a big city hospital but the anesthesia and pain-management options are equal as well.
“Prowers Medical Center’s administration has the ‘yes’ mindset,” said Newcomer. “When we as healthcare professionals ask how we can do it, how we can do it better and how can we help provide the best for our patients, our leaders always support excellence.”
