Provider Feature – Allison Buck, FNP

The newest addition to the Prowers Medical Center Family Medicine team has close ties to the hospital — she was born there.

Allison Buck, MSN, FNP-C, is the newest provider who will visit with Prowers Medical Center patients as their family nurse practitioner. She was born at the hospital 30 years ago and raised in Eads, and as of November 2020, her journey came full circle when she became an employee of the healthcare facility.

“I am excited to rebuild relationships with members of the community I haven’t seen in many years and also build new relationships within the community,” she said.

Medical Background

Buck graduated from Eads High School in 2009 and received a full-ride scholarship to the Helen and Arthur E. Johnson Beth-El College of Nursing and Health Sciences at the University of Colorado – Colorado Springs. Graduating with her bachelor’s degree with honors in 2013, she began her career as a registered nurse.

Buck spent most of her time as a nurse working in the Emergency Department, with a few years of experience in Labor and Delivery as well.

“The combination of these two career ventures truly helped me gain experience by caring for patients throughout the lifespan,” she said. “After 5 years of working as a registered nurse, I felt I had gained enough experience and that it was time to accomplish another career aspiration of mine — becoming a Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP).”

In 2017, Buck pursued her Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) at her alma mater while working as an ER nurse at Penrose-St. Francis Health Center in Colorado Springs. She graduated with her degree in May 2020 and became certified with the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) in September 2020.

Buck’s experience of taking care of patients in several stages of their lives inspired her specialty in Family Practice. In her new role, she can take care of all patient populations, including pediatrics, adolescents, women’s health, acute and chronic conditions, men’s health, geriatrics and more.

“The most rewarding part of healthcare is building relationships and trust with patients,” she said. “My main goal when approaching patient care is prevention and education. I personally believe that the more you know about your health, the better decisions you can make. Whether it be on medications, disease processes or test results, I believe that the first step to health is understanding.”

Dedicated to the Community

With her new role at Prowers Medical Center, Buck opted to move to Eads with her boyfriend, Logan, to be closer to her mom, sister and grandmother. She is the proud fur mom to a 2-year-old pug, Lola, and 10-year-old rescue cat, Lily.

In her free time, you can find Buck snowboarding, camping, cooking and decorating. She played several sports in high school and has remained an avid follower and fan of her hometown Eads Eagles.

Buck has always been interested in a career in healthcare. She developed a passion for the helping others at the young age of 16, when she as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) at Weisbrod Memorial Hospital in Eads, now known as Kiowa County Hospital District.

After working there for her junior and senior year of high school and a few college summers, she became determined to pursue her dream of becoming a nurse, and one day, a nurse practitioner near her hometown in Southeast Colorado.

“Living in Colorado Springs for the last 11 years has been an eye-opening experience and has made me extremely appreciative of rural communities,” she said. “There truly is nothing like the sense of family you get from living in a small town. I wanted to return to Southeast Colorado because I was raised in this area and I understand the importance of having access to exceptional and reliable healthcare.”
