Board-certified OB/GYN Dr. Christian Korkis has been caring for women of the Lamar-area community for more than 20 years. A 1986 graduate of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, he estimates he’s delivered close to 4,500 babies in his career.

“It’s a beautiful, gratifying job,” he said. “There’s great satisfaction in delivering a baby.”

As the pillar of OB care in Prowers County since 2001, Dr. Korkis is thrilled that the Prowers Medical Center OB unit is up and running again after a 16-month hiatus that ended on February 27, 2023.

“We’re back to doing about 12 deliveries a month,” he said. “While we continued to provide women’s-health services during the hiatus, including prenatal care, I’m so glad the New Beginnings Birth Center is open again. The Labor and Delivery staff are very experienced and skilled. And the clinic care is equally excellent.”

A Career Dedicated to Patients

In medical school, Dr. Korkis originally wanted to be a neurosurgeon, but his OB rotation changed his mind. After his residency, he practiced in his home state of New Jersey for some time before relocating to Colorado about 20 years ago. In New Jersey, Dr. Korkis often worked 90 hours a week and rarely got to spend time with his family. He and his wife, Lisa, a former labor and delivery nurse, wanted a more balanced life and a calmer place in which to raise their three children.

“Compared to the East Coast, people in Colorado are very calm,” he said. “A good environment for children is a key factor.”

At first Dr. Korkis set up a gynecology practice in Fort Collins but was soon invited down to Lamar to cover days off for the main OB doctor at the time. What started out as a few days a month in Lamar grew to two-plus weeks, and his Lamar practice became his focus.

Dr. Korkis continues this schedule to this day. His children attended Colorado State University and are now out on their own, but he and Lisa still live near Fort Collins, in Windsor. He comes to Lamar for about 18 solid days every month, staying in Prowers Medical Center staff housing while he’s here. When Dr. Korkis isn’t in-house at Prowers Medical Center, other OB/GYN physicians provide coverage.

“When I’m here, I’m here 100%,” he said. “I just really like it here. The people are very kind, and the staff are excellent.”

It’s Flu Shot Time!

The CDC recommends that with rare exceptions, everyone 6 months and older should receive an influenza vaccination every year.

The flu vaccine protects against serious illness, hospitalization and death.

If you get your shot now, you’ll be protected all winter long.

Flu vaccines are available on a walk-in basis. To schedule appointments for COVID and RSV vaccines, please call 719-336-6767.

OB/GYN Care at Prowers Medical Center

Sue Selker, RN, Manager of the New Beginnings Birth Center at Prowers Medical Center, is also glad to be providing OB services again.

“Everything is going very well in our birthing center,” reported Selker who has 25 years’ experience as an OB nurse and in OB leadership. “We have great patient satisfaction. And we are specializing in super-cute babies!”

Dr. Korkis emphasized that the OB care at Prowers Medical Center is “exceptionally superb.”

“I always tell the nurses here they’re the best in America,” he said. “I’ve worked at a number of hospitals in my career, and the nurses at Prowers Medical Center take care of the patients the best. They’re very kind and astute. This is a really good hospital.”
