Did you know that people in Prowers and surrounding counties no longer have to travel to receive high-level, high-quality orthopedic care? Prowers Medical Center offers these services close to home, thanks to visiting Orthopedic Surgeon Dr. Ryan Carr and Certified Orthopedic Physician Assistant Alan Garcia.

Dr. Carr is on site at least three times a month. Based in Denver, he sees orthopedic patients locally, developing treatment plans and performing surgeries alongside Garcia.

Garcia is a retired Army veteran of 24 years out of Colorado Springs. He is an orthopedic-fellowshiptrained, full-time Prowers Medical Center provider. He provides routine and emergent care for orthopedic patients in between visits from Dr. Carr. Orthopedic services help treat various challenges with pain, functionality and range-of-motion of the musculoskeletal system, including issues with fractures, joints and muscles. By using the latest methods and techniques, our orthopedic team helps patients get back to living a mobile, healthy lifestyle.

“My goal is to bring big-city orthopedic services to you in Lamar,” Dr. Carr said.

“We offer services here that you can get in Colorado Springs or Denver,” Garcia said.

More Orthopedic Offerings Than Ever

The team approach is to focus on conservative management of a patient’s condition first before surgery is considered. A variety of techniques can help patients manage and even correct their conditions without surgery. Garcia provides a variety of specialized injections so patients do not have to travel two to three hours.

In 2024, we’re offering our popular Health Fair once each quarter! For just $25, you’ll receive seven essential blood tests (eight for men) that help you and your providers stay on top of your health.

“What’s unique about rural communities is they don’t tend to seek the medical care immediately. They often show up when things are at the point where surgery might be the only option,” Dr. Carr explained. “But we exhaust conservative management first and work with patients to get back to the high level of activity they were able to do before their injury.”

When surgery is needed, the advanced surgical suites at Prowers Medical Center offer leading-edge surgical and visualization equipment — a premier working environment for orthopedic surgical teams. Pre-op and post-op areas provide a comfortable surgical and recovery environment for our patients.

Together Dr. Carr and Garcia perform many types of orthopedic surgeries, not just those limited to shoulder, hip and knee conditions. Whether a patient needs a full knee replacement, rotator cuff surgery, or a fracture reduction, these can now be accomplished here at Prowers Medical Center. They also have expertise in advanced arthroscopic surgeries, carpal tunnel release, trigger finger releases and more, including orthopedic trauma experience.

The team approaches patient care with transparency. With over 35 years of experience between them, they address common complaints among patients that some physicians don’t take the time to explain. The team reviews state-of-the-art imaging studies with their patients, and they discuss these findings with them in detail. They include patients in the decision making process and ensure they and their families understand what their expected pre- and post-surgical journey will look like.

“Fully explaining a patient’s condition or injury is critical,” explained Garcia. “We’re there every step of the way to ensure you have a good outcome.”

Quality Care Close to Home

The team quickly developed a great reputation over the past year and now have a robust practice here in Lamar.

Dr. Carr is a highly rated and reviewed orthopedic surgeon in Denver, the Front Range and across the state. He received his medical degree from Chicago Medical School and completed his surgical residency in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at the University of Illinois.

Dr. Carr is also board-certified and dual-fellowshiptrained, meaning he has an additional year of specialized training. During his fellowships, Dr. Carr was exposed to several high-level, complex cases and learned from medical leaders within the specialties of shoulder, knee and hip.

“It’s rewarding to see how I can help patients get back to their activities and become pain-free,” he concluded. “This community is very appreciative of the care provided to them, and that’s something that resonates with me as well.”
