Julie Grett has been a nurse since 1994 when she initially worked at Prowers Medical Center. Her journey took her other places and she became a Nurse Practitioner in 2016. Now, in 2022, she is re-joining the team at Prowers Medical Center – helping members in the community she calls home.
Grett says that her inspiration for becoming a nurse was her children. She wanted to have an education that would make them proud.
“At that time, I felt it was important to show my two daughters that education and hard work are important and that they could be capable of doing anything that they set their mind to,” Grett said.
A Career in Healthcare
Grett credits her exposure to working with Physician Assistants and Nurse Practitioners during her nursing career for putting her on the path she is on. She said that seeing them do their jobs inspired her to feel like she too could do what they were doing.

“As a Hispanic female, I didn’t see many mid-level practitioners that looked like me, so I went back to school,” Grett said. “I feel that working with people of all ages and ethnicities is important. However, I feel strongly that the Hispanic population should be able to see familiarity in a Provider.”
On any given day, you’ll find Julie Grett doing various procedures from birth control implants to prostate checks and more. Her approach is to treat the patient as a whole person, not just look at one specific complaint that they may have.
“The most rewarding part of my career is seeing my patients feel better,” Grett said. “Helping them get the specialized care needed is so important and I just feel blessed and am so happy to be able to do what I do. Caring for patients is a job like no other. It really isn’t a job. It’s a privilege.”
Outside of Work and in the Community
Julie Grett not only helps people while working, but she also is very involved in the Lamar community. Her husband has owned his own business in Lamar for 25 years. She also has a daughter who is married and works for the family business as well as two grandchildren, one from each of her two daughters.
Each year her family holds a 5K running event called “Beers and Brats for Boobies” in honor of her oldest daughter, who their family lost to breast cancer. The event was founded prior to her passing.
“It is meant really to honor all persons dealing with cancer of any type,” said Grett. “We are very proud of the event because it keeps the issue of cancer as a health issue still needing to be fought.”
Grett said that the Beers and Brats for Boobies event honors and acknowledges those that have lost their battle with cancer and those that continue to fight. She emphasized how important it is to her that she helps her patients receive the necessary screenings that look for different cancers because of her family’s loss.
Back Home in Lamar
Grett couldn’t emphasize enough that she is excited to be working at Prowers Medical Center again. She said that Lamar is her home and that she loves this community. She is also excited to be back at the place where she first began her nursing career in 1994, but mostly she is just grateful.
“I would like to say thank you to CEO Karen Bryant for inspiring so many women and for inviting me to join the Prowers Medical Center family,” Grett said. “I am also thankful for the people that entrust me with their health care needs and I wish all the people in our community good health.”
