Diagnostic imaging plays an important role in a patient’s preventative health. Imaging tests help medical providers take a closer look at what’s going on inside of their patients’ bodies. This may assist with a diagnosis that can’t be determined from an external exam.
Imaging specialists help detect disease before symptoms present, deliver medical providers further details about a specific bone or organ, and assist community members in leading healthy lives. Larry Booker, Imaging Manager at Prowers Medical Center, said he and his staff always aim to provide the best care and accurate results for their patients.
“We want to get our patients on the right care regimen to protect themselves,” he said. “We have the same equipment as a Level 1 Trauma Center. Our MRI suite, nuclear machine, DEXA scanner and mammography unit are what you’d find in any big-city imaging center. Everything we have right now is as good — if not better — than what you’d find at larger hospitals.”

Prowers Medical Center’s imaging staff provides high-quality radiology services that are necessary when diseases or conditions need to be diagnosed and treated within the body. In recent years, there have been many service upgrades to better serve our community.
CT Scans
At Prowers Medical Center, we have a state-of-the-art 64-slice CT scanning machine that can provide images as thin as half a millimeter, meaning the end image offers more detail than in a traditional CT scan. This “snapshot” gives providers clear and detailed look inside the patient’s body, helping to diagnose conditions accurately.
“The 64-slice CT scanner gives us the capability to perform about any procedure a provider would need,” Booker said. “There is no need for someone to travel outside of Lamar or Prowers County for a CT scan — we can do them here and provide faster results than other hospitals or clinics in larger cities.”
Mammography
Recommendations from the American Society of Breast Surgeons suggest women over 25 undergo formal risk assessment for breast cancer, including genetic testing and evaluation of personal radiation history. In addition, the American Cancer Society recommends women with average risk begin annual screenings between 40 and 44 years old.
Annual mammograms and routine self-examinations can help women find and treat breast cancer in its early stages, increasing their chances of survival.
Prowers Medical Center has 3D mammography imaging. This technology is used to take multiple X-rays of a patient’s breast tissue to form a clear, three-dimensional photo of the breast. A more advanced imaging test than traditional mammography, which only displays one 2D image of the breast, 3D mammography is used to help detect early signs of breast cancer.
3D mammography is FDA-approved and does not create any greater risk to the patient than a traditional mammogram. However, because all insurance plans may not cover 3D mammograms, it is recommended to contact your insurance provider before scheduling an appointment for this exam.
Ultrasounds
From genetics to obstetrics, your ultrasound needs can easily be taken care of at Prowers Medical Center. Many patients associate this test with pregnancies, as this type of scan allows parents the opportunity to see their unborn child through a monitor; however, there are multiple uses for ultrasounds. These tests can provide internal views of the gallbladder, kidneys, bladder, spleen, thyroid, liver, uterus and many other organs.
Nuclear Medicine
The recently updated Nuclear Medicine camera takes images of patients’ internal problems, helping to pinpoint issues that once needed surgery to diagnose.
“We want to stay current with all technology and imaging practices in the U.S.,” Booker concluded. “We want our patients to know they don’t have to travel to receive high-quality imaging services. Our machines have the same capabilities as all larger city hospitals. Our techs maintain their continuing education and are always reviewing the appropriate documentation to improve our processes. We can provide any service you need and more.”
