From birth to adulthood, Prowers Medical Center offers a wide range of Women’s Health services for patients in every stage of life. Whether you are looking for a new OB-GYN provider or you want to welcome your child into the world in your hometown, the Prowers Medical Center staff is able to deliver and provide quality care to you and your family.
Services offered include comprehensive obstetrical care, gynecological care, labor and delivery, newborn resuscitation, breastfeeding training, prenatal counseling, post-partum care, tubal ligations and many others. There are currently 13 registered nurses and two board-certified obstetricians and gynecologists on staff.
According to Julie Hobden, New Beginnings Birth Center Manager at Prowers Medical Center, the department has delivered over 1,500 babies over the last decade — an average of about 150 babies per year. Between deliveries and outpatient testing and monitoring, the team has 700 to 900 patient encounters every year.
“Visits are centered on care of the patient, where all questions are answered and a plan is discussed,” said Dr. Christian Korkis, OB/GYN physician at Prowers Medical Center. “The Prowers team works very closely with our patients, and it is important for the community to know that all care is offered right here at Prowers Medical Center — they do not have to leave town for these services.”
Prowers Medical Center is always accepting new and transfer patients and staff would love the opportunity to care for them.
OB-GYN Services for All Patients, Old and New
It’s important for all women to have an annual well-woman exam, which begins with having an OB-GYN provider they trust. Regular exams will ensure any health issues that arise or changes in health are caught right away, limiting the advancement of the condition.
OB-GYN physicians on staff have about 30 years of experience and are certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and all registered nurses have many years of experience taking care of obstetrical patients and babies. An OB-GYN provider is different from a Family Practice provider who offers obstetrical care in that OB-GYNs specialize specifically in women’s health services, ultimately having the ability to provide a higher level of care.
“Family Practice obstetrical providers may not take care of women with high-risk pregnancies and may need to transfer their care to an OB-GYN if the pregnancy develops complications, or the patient needs a C-section for delivery,” Dr. Korkis explained. “Our staff has the experience to provide total care from our initial contact with the patient.”
Full-scope obstetrical care encompasses prenatal care from the first trimester to delivery, including all testing, visits and deliveries. Gynecological care includes well-woman visits, birth control visits, STD testing, postmenopausal care and more.
“What makes Prowers Medical Center stand out is that the hospital has the best nurses in all of Colorado,” Dr. Korkis said. “They are exceptionally well trained and, most importantly, are very empathetic to the patient and their needs.”
New Beginnings Birth Center
The New Beginnings Birth Center at Prowers Medical Center aims to provide patients with the best care for the patient and her baby.
“We have the training to compete with any larger hospital,” Hobden said. “Care is delivered with a personal touch — patients aren’t just another number here. We care for our patients and their families as if they’re our family. We spend a lot of time on education, such as what to expect, baby care, how family dynamics will change, post-birth complications and warning signs to look for, and any necessary follow-up care.”
Vaginal and Cesarean section deliveries are performed at New Beginnings Birth Center, and staff ensures to schedule needed follow-ups with all patients after birth. Anesthesia providers are available 24/7, which allows for epidurals and surgeries when necessary.
In September 2020, the department was recognized and honored for achieving the “Celebrate 6 Award of Breastfeeding Excellence” at the 2020 Colorado Hospital Breastfeeding Summit. The award is presented to Colorado hospitals that provide excellent breastfeeding support as demonstrated through facility policies that meet six of the 10 requirements. New Beginnings meets nine out of the 10.
Kim Windels, a traveling registered nurse, said what stands out about the Prowers Medical Center staff is their compassionate approach and focus on community.
“For a hospital to have OB-GYN services when so many across the country are closing is life-altering for those in need,” she said. “The nurses and their manager make it seem easy here at Prowers Medical Center. These nurses work here, live here and stay here, because they genuinely care and know their work matters.”
