Medicare has set up a program that allows small rural hospitals to provide skilled nursing care. These services are the same as nursing home care but are provided in the hospital. A skilled nursing care (swing-bed) patient is discharged as an inpatient and readmitted as a skilled nursing patient. The patient stays in the same bed but is encouraged to dress and participate in activities. Swing Bed admissions may be less traumatic and threatening for the patient than going to a nursing home. It is important for patients and/or their representatives to understand that the patient must meet and continue to meet the Medicare skilled nursing criteria to remain in the hospital. The patient must participate in his/her treatment program and demonstrate progress. If the patient does not participate or does not show progress the Swing Bed stay must be terminated. There is no guarantee of 100 days; in fact the Swing Bed stays in the hospital are usually only a few weeks. Skilled Nursing/Swing Bed Coordinator: (719) 336-4343 extension 1641 |
