Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) Certification
CLIA is a lab testing quality standard that was first established in 1988 to ensure the accuracy, reliability and timeliness of patient test results regardless of where the test was performed, and became part of the Federal Register in 1992. CLIA certification is required for any laboratory that performs tests on "materials derived from the human body" for diagonstic, treatment, health assessment or prevention purposes.

Diagnostic testing helps health care providers screen for or monitor specific diseases or conditions. It also helps assess patient health to make clinical decisions for patient care.

The Prowers Medical Center Laboratory Services Team maintains this certification by consistently meeting the regulatory guidelines developed through the state as well as the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).

CLIA certification assists our Laboratory Team in achieving excellence by promoting a level of professional and technical expertise that contributes to quality performance and patient safety.

Reduced Time to Report Critical Labs
Prowers Medical Center has an up to date PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) analyzer which utilizes NAAT (Nucleic Acid Amplification Testing) to shorten the time between when a patient has been infected and when a positive/negative result is obtained. The polymerase chain reaction (PCR) is a technology in molecular biology used to amplify a single copy or a few copies of DNA across several orders of magnitude, generating thousands of copies of a particular DNA sequence.

In efforts to improve patient care, PMC purchased this analyzer to decrease the time it takes to get a provider the results they need to begin treatment on specific bacteria. The analyzer currently tests for the presence of Staph Aureus, Methicillin Resistant Staph Aureus (MRSA), Clostridium Difficile in stool samples, and gonorrhea/chlamydia from urine samples.

Turnaround time is one of the most noticeable signs of laboratory service and is a key indicator used by many clinicians to judge the quality of the Laboratory. The Laboratory Team at Prowers Medical Center remains focused on continuous quality improvement efforts to provide the most effective and efficient laboratory services that meet the needs and expectations of our patients and healthcare providers.
